
Maurice “Mo” Edu was born on April 18, 1986 in Fontana, California. His parents are Maurice and Molly, and he has a younger brother named Reggie and three older sisters; Ugo, Imeh, and Molly. Besides soccer, growing up Mo was also a big basketball fan and lists Michael Jordan as one of his childhood heroes.
In high school, Mo was quite a dynamic player. At Etiwanda High in California he tallied 35 goals and 33 assists in three seasons, and was the team’s leading goal scorer each year. He was the league MVP as a senior, a two-time all-county selection, as well as high school athlete of the year. Besides that, Mo received NSCAA All-American honors, was a McDonald’s All-American, as well as an Adidas ESP All-Star. Before moving on to college soccer, he also won numerous titles with his club team, the Mission Viejo Pateadoras.
Before starting his professional career, Mo played at the University of Maryland for three seasons. As a Terrapin, he was a first team NSCAA All-American and Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2006. He started 55 games in 3 seasons and led the Terps to a NCAA semifinal appearance in 2004, a National Championship in 2005, and an appearance in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2006. In his final season as a Terp, he recorded an incredible 5 game winning goals.
After three years of playing at Maryland, Mo forfeited his final year of NCAA eligibility to enter the 2007 MLS Superdraft.
As a Generation Adidas player, Mo was drafted by Toronto as the 1st overall pick. He made his MLS debut on April 25th, 2007 at Kansas City after missing his first few games and an entire preseason with an injury. Mo scored his first goal for Toronto FC on May 12, 2007 versus the Chicago Fire. In 2007, Mo started 25 of 25 games and scored 4 goals and was named the Gatorade MLS Rookie of the Year. He earned his first caps with the US National Team against Switzerland in October and South Africa in November.
Mo began the 2008 MLS season in impressive fashion before leaving to join the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing. After returning from the Olympics, Mo was transferred to the Glasgow Rangers of the Scottish Premier League, one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs. Mo is now splitting time between the Rangers and the U.S. National Team as the National team begins its quest to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Mo still plans to finish up his business degree from Maryland. He lists his favorite music as Rap and R&B. He enjoys eating Italian and Mexican food and on his off time, he enjoys playing sports video games.
